History

Petaluma traces its origins to the Miwok tribe that occupied much of Sonoma County prior to the arrival of Mexican and Spanish settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its name was said to be derived from the name of an old Miwok Village located by the river – Péta Lúuma. Here are several significant milestones in Petaluma’s colorful history:
  • Mid-19th century: The Gold Rush saw a deluge of prospectors and other hopeful miners coming to the area thanks to Petaluma’s convenient riverfront location.

  • February 1858: The city of Petaluma was incorporated and became a hub for shipping and manufacturing. So, even when the clamor for gold died down, Mexican settlers continued to come in, attracted by Petaluma’s rapidly growing economy.

  • Early 20th century: Petaluma was hailed as the “Egg Basket of the World” with the growth of its egg industry.

  • 1906: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 destroyed much of San Francisco and nearby areas. Thankfully, Petaluma was spared from the destruction caused by the catastrophic tremor and the resulting fires. That’s why many structures built here more than a century ago remain standing to this day.
